The Barclaycard Mercury Prize is best known for it’s celebration and championing of UK music, in particular, the UK and Irish ‘Albums of the Year’. Whilst this hasn’t changed, there’s been some exciting additions and shakeups made to the Prizes for 2012.
This year, the awards have been moved to the iconic venue of the Roundhouse in Camden, and Channel 4 coverage is being stepped up a notch, whilst the artists shortlisted for the ‘Album of the Year’ are playing a gig in November when the overall winner of the accolade will be announced.
However, before all these shenanigins can begin, the ‘Album of the Year’ launch party, obviously must rock up at the Hospital Club in Covent Garden in September. A worthy location for a venue which is held in both great esteem and as a partner of the Prizes itself. All of the shortlisted artists will also be playing gigs throughout October, which will allow for music fans to have opportunity to become a part of the night itself, through the increasing use of promotions and competitions for tickets. These sessions are set to be incredible the artists shortlisted are undoubtedly going to be some of the best talent the UK and Ireland have to offer. Not only will it allow for existing fans to experience music they love first hand, it means that the music is delivered to a much wider audience, through increased broadcasting on Channel 4, and media platforms such as channel4.com and 4music.com.
The Barclaycard Mercury Prizes just got even better. You don’t see Santander doing stuff like this.
