LIVE REVIEW ::: Ibiza Rocks ::: Tinie Tempah & Modestep rock Ibiza

Last week saw the 11th Ibiza Rocks event of the Summer 2012 season. Having already had a number of top acts grace the Ibiza Rocks stage so far this Summer, there was a special air of excitement in San Antonio for the 3rd time return of Tinie Tempah for his headline set. With Channel 4 filming for their Ibiza Rocks TV special and the likes of SB.TV and Republic in the house it was a lively atmosphere from the moment doors opened.

Before the main event the Ibiza Rocks crowd were treated to awesome DJ sets from DJ Colin Peters and Ibiza Rocks resident DJ’s Nicola Bear and DJ Doorly. Whether it was Bear playing classic tracks such as ‘Shorty Swing My Way’ or Doorly playing classic dubstep the crowd were kept well entertained as the the Ibiza Rocks complex filled up nicely.

Up next was the four-piece live bass-heavy band Modestep. If you haven’t seen these guys you are truly missing out. The 4 piece band took entertaining to a whole new level. Whether it was their own spin on popular tracks such as Ceelo Green’s ‘F**k You’ or DJ Fresh ‘Louder’ or their own tracks such as ‘Sunlight’ or ‘Show Me A Sign’ they had the whole Ibiza Rocks crowd bouncing, jumping and hand waving like you wouldn’t believe as each track featured a trademark drop. The beauty of this band is that each member is insanely talented as they each demonstrated during the shout out section of their set. Josh amazed with his vocals, Tony showed his skills on the turntable, Nick did likewise on the guitar and Matt showed exactly why Josh described him as “best drummer on the f*cking planet.” Although this was their first gig in Ibiza, it will be a huge surprise if they aren’t invited back for a headline slot next Summer!

Then it was the moment that everyone had been waiting for. The man himself Tinie Tempah took to the stage. And boy did he put on a show! Kicking off his set with his introduction from his ‘Discovery’ album the crowd went crazy for him. He then went onto show how much of an iconic album ‘Discovery’ is for British music performing hit after hit including ‘Simply Unstoppable’ ‘Frisky’ and ‘Wonderman’ (which of course had everyone with their W’s up in the air and singing along – Ellie Goulding would have been proud!). Then it was another hit ‘Written In The Stars’ – there’s something rather special about this song when DJ Charlesy cuts the track and 2000 people just sing out the lyrics word for word at the top of their lungs. All Tinie Tempah could say afterwards was ‘Wow!’ in his trademark fashion!

The set wasn’t finished there. Tinie performed his two feature tracks ‘Earthquake’ and ‘RIP’ which again had everyone filling in his raps whenever prompted. Then came the track that probably everyone was waiting for. Explaining that he was so glad to not have to change any words for this one, the infamous beat of ‘Miami 2 Ibiza’ kicked in. Ibiza Rocks officially went MENTAL!! As has become customary Tinie made everyone ‘go low’. Even DJ Charlesy couldn’t resist jumping into the front row crowd to ‘go low’ and jump up when the beat kicked in.

Tinie then treated the crowd to tracks off his forthcoming album ‘Demonstration’. First up was ‘Drinking From The Bottle’ – another catchy anthem sure to do well on release. Of course that track had to end with a champagne shower! Then Tinie performed ‘Moshpit’ – this hyped crowd didn’t need to be told twice as mini moshpits were formed in the full capacity crowd. The set was finished off with 3 reloads of the track that first made Tinie Tempah a household name ‘Pass Out’. As infectious as when it first came out, the whole Ibiza Rocks crowd went into overdrive with people on the main floor, the VIP areas and the bedroom balconies all raving out.

It’s fair to say that Tinie Tempah is probably one of the most energetic and entertaining UK acts to see live. The connection him and DJ Charlesy have on stage is something truly special and it’s no surprise that he is already a cornerstone of the Ibiza Rocks Summer schedule. It would be hard to imagine him not being invited back next year for his 4th headline show.
