Following two successful Speakerbox events at BCM Mallorca with the likes of Skepta, P Money, Shy FX all performing, the third installment of BBC 1Xtra Mistajam’s night was back in town. With a live PA from Labrinth and a DJ set from DJ legend Andy C, the stage was set for another amazing night. With the tagline for the night being ‘The Place For Bass’, that’s exactly what the BCM crowd in Mallorca were treated to!
Local resident BCM DJ’s kicked the night off with their usual warm up DJ sets as the crowds poured into the 5,500 capacity venue. As the venue started to fill, Mistajam took to the decks around 12am (not leaving the DJ booth / stage area for the rest of the night) and in his own unique, energetic style got the crowd going with a series of bass-pumping tunes. Whether it was remixes of commercial tracks such as Jay Z & Kanye West’s ‘N*ggas In Paris’ or classics such as DJ Luck & MC Neat ‘ A Little Bit of Luck’ the crowd were hyped from beginning to end. Mistajam then introduced his special guest P Money to the stage who spat bars over more bass anthems.
Next to keep the crowd entertained was Majestic. As the official front man / MC for Wideboys, Micky Slim and Jacob Plant live sets, Majestic kept the crowd hyped. As the tunes got even bassier and mini moshpits ensued on the packed dancefloor, Majestic introduced DJ Andy C. As a figurehead for the drum and bass movement, Andy was in his element and the crowd loved every minute of his 60 minute set. With Mistajam taking to the stage and acting as MC and general crowd pleaser with his funny dances and Speakerbox T-Shirt giveaways it made for another entertaining hour of the night.
At around 3am, it was Labrinth’s turn to grace the Speakerbox stage. Opening up his set with his track ‘Climb On Board’ from his debut album Electronic Earth. Ensuring that the crowd was hyped, Labrinth then proceeded to perform a string of hits including ‘Express Yourself’, ‘Last Time and ‘Let The Sun Shine’. Most surprising was when Labrinth brought out his guitar and performed a an acoustic rendition of ‘Frisky’. It simply shouldn’t have worked with this overly hyped crowd but it went down a treat with 5,000 people singing back every word – a truly special Speakerbox moment!
Of course, Labrinth had to end his set with smash hit ‘Earthquake’ – bass was back in the place! Reloading the track a few times until he was happy that the crowd were having ‘the time of their lives’ Labrinth jumped up and down on stage as he does best. A true performer and a worthy addition to the lineup.
One of the other memorable moments of the night was when Mistajam took back to the decks. As his phone flashed he noticed a tweet from none other than Snoop Dogg (or Snoop Lion as he is now known) with a link to his brand new track ‘La La La’. As Mistajam downloaded the track and cued it up, he announced it to the crowd who went crazy!
As the crowds continued to party to the DJ sets that followed until 5.30am it’s clear to see that Speakerbox at BCM is establishing itself as one of the most popular Friday night destinations in Mallorca.
